People read books for several different reasons.

La gente lee libros por distintas razones.

Some read because it is their job to experience the contents of books – scholars, teachers, librarians, professional people who have to keep up with the advances in knowledge which are made in their professional areas.

Algunos leen porque su oficio requiere trabajar con los contenidos de los libros – académicos, profesores, bibliotecarios, profesionales que tienen que mantenerse al día con los avances en conocimientos que se realizan en sus ámbitos profesionales.

Others read because they want to, and for no other reason. These readers see in literature a way of amusing themselves. Some will go to poetry, others to novels, to biographies or autobiographies, etc.

Otros leen porque quieren, y por ninguna otra razón. Estos lectores ven en la literatura una forma de entretenimiento. Algunos recurrirán a la poesía, a las novelas, a las biografías o autobiografías, etc.

To begin with, there are the “classics.” These are reprinted over and over again in editions or series which are relatively cheap; and if a book is included in them we know with certainty that it is worth our attention.

Para empezar, están los clásicos. Estos son reimpresos una y otra vez en ediciones o series que son relativamente baratas; y si un libro es incluido en ellas sabemos con certeza que merece la pena nuestra atención.

 

Then there are the contemporary books. These are more expensive. Some people think that these books are not so fine “from a literary point of view”, but they are written by people like ourselves, about people like ourselves, and with ourselves in view as readers.

Después están los libros contemporáneos. Estos son más caros. Algunas personas creen que estos libros no son tan delicados/ cuidados “desde el punto de vista literario”, pero están escritos por gente como nosotros, sobre gente como nosotros y teniéndonos a nosotros en cuenta como lectores.

Novel-reading is now an almost universal pastime; people who read nothing else relax with a novel during their leisure hours. The demand is great; and what is even more encouraging, there is considerable variety in the reading public. All levels of taste and education are represented, and the writer can quickly find his own sphere. Many famous novelists-Conan Doyle and Arnold Bennett, for instance-began in the magazines as free-lancers, and thus laid the foundations of their popularity while learning dexterity.

Leer novelas es ahora un pasatiempo universal; la gente que no lee otra cosa se relaja con una novella durante su tiempo de ocio. La demanda es grande; y lo que es incluso más alentador es que hay una considerable variedad dentro del público lector. Todos los niveles de gusto y educación son representados,y el escritor puede rápidamente encontrar su propia ámbito. Muchos novelistas famosos-Conan Doyle y Arnold Bennett, por ejemplo- empezaron escribiendo en revistas como escritores “free-lance”(por libre o por cuenta propia), y de este modo cimentaron su popularidad mientras adquirían (más) habilidad o destreza.

Selling books or being successful after writing is largely a matter of being able to assess the kind of appeal your story is likely to make. There are great many levels of public taste, and the problem is hit the right one.

Vender libros o tener éxito después de escribir es en gran parte una cuestión de ser capaz de calcular el tipo de llamamiento o atractivo que tu historia es probable que tenga. Hay muchos niveles de gusto popular, y el problema es dar con el correcto.
